Description

German mathematician and physical scientist (1777-1855) who contributed significantly to many fields, including geometry and astronomy; he is often referred to as the 'prince of mathematicians' or 'the greatest mathematician since antiquity.' ALS in German, signed “C. F. Gauss,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, August 12, 1840. Untranslated handwritten letter to astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve, founder and director of the Pulkovo Observatory near St. Petersburg. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining and soiling.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
