American inventor (1818–1903) best known for his invention of the Gatling gun, considered to be the first successful machine gun; his other inventions include a screw propeller and a wheat drill, a hemp break machine, a steam plow, a marine steam ram, and a motor-driven plow. ALS signed “R. J. Gatling,” one page, 4.5 x 7, "The Autograph Collection of Howes Norris, Jr." letterhead, March 26, 1896. Handwritten letter to autograph collector Howes Norris, Jr., in full: "We should make it a rule to find something to do:—something to think about. Idleness seldom brings riches or contentment." In fine condition.
