Description

Renowned polar explorer (1874-1922) who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Union of London & Smiths Bank check, 7.75 x 3.25, filled out and signed by Shackleton, "E. H. Shackleton," payable to Cash for $9, December 2, 1911. Shackleton also strikes through "Order," writing "Bearer," and his initials, "E.H.S." In fine condition, with cancellations touching the signature. Mere days after cashing this check, Shackleton’s ambition to be the first to reach the South Pole came to an end when a five-man party led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen achieved that feat on December 14, 1911.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
