Description

French poet, playwright, and film director (1889–1963) known for works such as the novel Les Enfants Terrible in 1929, and his film La Belle et la Bête in 1945. ALS in French, signed “Jean,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Santo-Sospir letterhead, August 30, 1960. Handwritten letter to "Mon cher Jean," Jean Delannoy, the director with whom Cocteau co-wrote the screenplay for 'La Princesse de Clèves,' recommending the son of his close friend, the painter François Boret, "who dreams of appearing in any scene" of the film. In part (translated): "Since this type of face is very rare…I promised to send you his photograph. I mentally transport myself to your work every day, and I will arrive in person the day after tomorrow." Cocteau fills the center of the page with a unique double-profile sketch, forming the faces of a young man and two fish formed out of constellations, and adds his friend's address on the reverse. In fine condition, with a light paperclip impression to the top edge.
