ALS signed “T. Carlyle,” one page, 4.25 x 7, March 7, 1848. Addressed from Chelsea, a handwritten letter to “Lord Mahon,” Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope, in part: “Emerson, our New-England friend, is come to town: will there room if I bring him with me on Friday morning? He is a very tame lion (I engage), and will roar only like a sucking dove.” In fine condition, with a few small stains.
Thomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson shared a long transatlantic friendship, the fruits of which resulted in one of the best-known literary correspondences of the nineteenth century. After their first meeting in the early 1830s, they maintained an exchange of letters for nearly forty years, influencing one another’s thinking and careers, with Carlyle shaping Emerson’s engagement with history and philosophy and Emerson helping to introduce Carlyle to an American audience.
Their relationship was sometimes strained by differences in temperament and politics, particularly during Emerson’s return to London in March 1848, when Carlyle and his wife Jane took issue with aspects of Emerson’s lectures. Still, the friendship endured, and later that year, a shared trip to Stonehenge helped ease tensions. Though their correspondence became less frequent over time, especially as political differences grew, they remained on congenial terms and continued writing to one another until Carlyle's death in 1881.
Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope (1805–1875), styled Viscount Mahon between 1816 and 1855, was an English antiquarian and Tory politician. He held political office under Sir Robert Peel in the 1830s and 1840s but is best remembered for his contributions to cultural causes and for his historical writings. He was a noted champion and friend of Thomas Carlyle.
