President Cleveland authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to an “Envelope containing my letter addressed to H.M. Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria, etc., on the birth of a Princess and immediate family of H.I.R.H., the Archduke Frederick.” Signed neatly at the conclusion in ink by President Grover Cleveland. In fine condition. The “Princess” referenced here was likely Archduchess Gabriele of Austria-Teschen, born just two months earlier in September 1887 to Archduke Friedrich and Princess Isabella of Croÿ-Dülmen. An interesting diplomatic document reflecting the formal courtesies exchanged between the American presidency and the Habsburg court during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, before the upheavals of World War I transformed relations between the United States and Austria-Hungary.
