Manuscript DS, signed "John Hancock," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 11.75, August 3, 1790. Castle Island court martial document outlining two separate cases, certified at the conclusion by John Hancock as governor of Massachusetts. In the first, three prisoners, Robert Stewared, John Pain, and Ebenezer Root, plead guilty to concealing themselves with intent to escape, their punishment being "fifty stripes on their naked Backs." In the second case, John Kinney, found guilty of setting fire to the prison, is sentenced to "100 stripes on his naked back." Hancock endorses a secretarial statement at the conclusion: "I do approve of the above sentence of Court martial, and Order that it be put into execution tomorrow morning at Eight O’Clock." Matted with a copy of the first page and an engraved portrait (featuring Hancock's facsimile signature) to an overall size of 38 x 18. In fine condition.
