Description

TLS as president, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, November 24, 1914. Letter to J. E. Gill of the Rider-Moore & Stewart School, Trenton, New Jersey, in full: "I have your kind letter of November twelfth. It goes hard to say that I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible for me to accept the invitation to which it refers, but, unhappily, my duty is only too plain.

In the first place, you will, of course, understand that I am not in spirits for social entertainments and that for that reason, if for no other, I have been declining banquet invitations. But there is the further reason, to which I feel the more at liberty to yield, that my public duties demand my constant and exclusive attention. In February we shall be at the heart of the short session of the Sixty-third Congress, the session in which all its work must be wound up. I cannot consistently with the standards I have set up for myself be absent at that time.

When your committee was here, I was so tempted by the desire to revisit Trenton and see my old friends that I spoke more hopefully of the matter than I was really justified in speaking. I now see the whole thing in a clearer light and must reconcile myself to the disappointment." In very good to fine condition, with creasing, soiling, and a fold passing through the signature.
