ALS in Yiddish, one page both sides, 8.25 x 11.75, postmarked August 21, 1974. Handwritten letter to David Giladi, a Jewish art dealer and a collector of Chagall's work, in part (translated): "I received the text from you and I thank you and hope that my gratitude will reach you. I hope you will discover my Judaism in my art. Judaism and art go hand in hand, art is general and very important, and I feel your attitude about me, especially since you write and designate your writing for the people of Israel. Personally, I am not at all able, at the moment, to take part in this debate between Judaism and art, and it is up to you alone to carry out what you want in the matter. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to participate in this." In very good to fine condition, with some light staining. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Chagall's own hand and incorporating his surname into the return address on the flap.
