ALS signed “W. McKinley, Jr.,” one page, 7.75 x 10.75, State of Ohio, Executive Department letterhead, February 26, 1893. Handwritten letter to Mrs. Bell C. Taylor, in part: "Your loving letter to Mrs. McKinley came today and she asks me to acknowledge it and express to you our appreciation of the tender and sympathetic words it contains. Your letter has done us both good and brought comfort to our hearts. Ida's conduct in this great misfortune, has been simply heroic. We wish for you speedy and permanent recovery of your health and a safe return to your happy home. Accept sincere thanks and the love of Mrs. McKinley." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Throughout the 1890s, Ida McKinley faced severe health challenges, primarily recurring, violent seizures (likely epilepsy), intense headaches, depression from past family losses, and chronic phlebitis, making her a semi-invalid needing constant care. Doctors, unsure of treatments, used barbiturates, laudanum, and other sedatives to manage her symptoms; her condition affected her ability to participate in William McKinley's political campaigns, though her illness and her husband's devotion also generated public sympathy.
