Description

English author and playwright (1907–1989) best known for her novel Rebecca and horror story 'The Birds,' both of which were adapted for the screen and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. TLS signed “Daphne,” one page both sides, 5 x 7, Menabilly letterhead, July 31. Letter to Gwenllyan Davies, in part: "Thank you so much for your letter, which I found waiting for me when I got home from Switzerland. Boy and I had been away for a fortnight's holiday, lovely, in the Alps. We hope all will be well with Tessa and her young man. We barely know him as yet, and now the poor boy has got the mumps, so can't come down here with Tessa for the week-end, so it's all rather disappointing. Tessa seems very happy, but I rather think it will mean her becoming an R.C. which may, or may not, be a good idea. Marriage date still uncertain, depending upon regimental movements and so on.

Tell Reginald it is fatal to retire. The rot will set in. People should go on working until they are lifted into bath-chairs. What about those plans for Portugal? Time was when you were going to settle there, I remember discussing it. It's the English winter (not to mention the summer) that gets me down. I can't say I ever sigh for Sidi-Biche, or whatever it was called, but a gleam of sunshine sometimes would help declining years, don't you think?" In fine condition, with one rough edge and an ink notation below her signature.
