Description

English author and playwright (1907–1989) best known for her novel Rebecca and horror story 'The Birds,' both of which were adapted for the screen and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. TLS signed “Daphne,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 7, Kilmarth letterhead, July 25, 1973. Letter to Gwenllyan Davies, in part: "How very nice to hear from you, and what ages ago it all seems, Alexandria, the cocktail- parties, drives to the desert, dinners aboard ship—the Lot. Fun now in retrospect, but quite hard going at the time. I had no idea Reginald had died, and I am most terribly sorry. The loneliness is frightful at first, but somehow one gets through, and adapts, and I think it did help in my own case when I moved here in '69 and somehow faced a new outlook. Also, pegging away at various books keep me occupied. Yes, indeed, I remember the poems that Reginald and I exchanged, and they were most amusing.

I thought I had kept them, and looked in my desk this morning, but no trace. I must have cleared the desk before leaving Menabilly, and they went with many other things, what a shame. You will remember my precocious small girl Tessa. Now such a dear, forty this year (!) and happy in her second marriage, to David Montgomery, old Monty's son…I am quite out of touch with all the Alexandrine lot. Do you remember the Peels, Barkers, Carvers, Finneys, and our various Grenadier officers and wives? Many now dead. However, I mustn't end on a gloomy note. I do hope you settle happily on your own with family visits from time to time, but you will miss Portugal." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
