World War II-dated TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate letterhead, January 19, 1942. Letter to John D. Florance of Chicago, in part: "You are to be congratulated on your desire to face the emergency once more, but my suggestion to you is that some one has to stay home in order to keep the boys on the front supplied with the things they need. The War Department won't accept me any more because they say I am beyond the age, and that some one must stay home and do a little work. If you are situated as you say you are I think you are doing your duty in the front line. Of course if the emergency gets more acute it may be necessary to make use of your experience. I don't think it is necessary now, but I know how you feel." In fine condition, with minor loss to the upper right corner tip. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
