"I have indeed one autograph left, all but the signature being in the handwriting of John Adams, and including his name, to which you are welcome"

Son of President John Quincy Adams (1807-1886) who served in the U.S. House of Representatives until he resigned to assume office as Ambassador to Great Britain during the Lincoln administration. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, October 30, 1878. Addressed from Quincy, a handwritten letter to Ebenezer Lane, Jr., in full: “I should be glad to oblige you in regard to your request, but I am afraid I cannot do so. The demand has been carried on steadily for many years, and my stock which I can spare is exhausted. I have indeed one autograph left, all but the signature being in the handwriting of John Adams, and including his name, to which you are welcome.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 9 x 11.25. In fine condition.
