Description

President Johnson pardons a 'poor, exceedingly ignorant' Ohioan counterfeiter arrested for 'passing a counterfeit United States treasury note'

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, September 3, 1867. President Johnson authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of Absalom Liggett.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. In fine condition.

As referenced in the 1868 House of Representatives documents archive: ‘Absalom Liggett was convicted at the September term 1866 of the United States court for the northern district of Ohio of passing a counterfeit United States treasury note and sentenced to four years imprisonment. The prisoner was sixty-eight years old, in very feeble health, poor, exceedingly ignorant, and it was claimed by a large number of persons that he was innocent of guilty knowledge or intent. In consideration of these facts, his pardon was granted.’
