Celebrated composer (1910–1981) whose Adagio for Strings is widely considered a masterpiece of modern classical music. TLS signed “Sam,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 17, 1973. Letter to "Hans," notably mentioning his life partner and fellow composer, Gian Carlo Menotti. In part: "Thank you for your letter which was forwarded to me here at Gian Carlo's house at Spoleto. I shall be here for several weeks and then come to New York, where I look forward to seeing you. I must say my New York trip was a strange one and the worst part of it was that I came back from it very tired, perhaps from it's very uselessness. I really don't see how you business men get around the world so easily; obviously because you have no feelings." Here, Barber playfully sketches a tiny smiley face.
He continues: "On the other hand, I did have a nice hand-written letter from Fischer-Dieskau of apology about the cancellation, saying that he loved the songs and would do them at the first opportunity. When? After all, they will have to decide between the Chamber Music Society and the great man!" In fine condition, with light creasing to the lower right corner.
