Writer of hard-boiled detective novels, short stories, and screenplays (1894–1961) known for developing the characters of Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon), Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man), The Continental Op (Red Harvest and The Dain Curse). TLS, one page, 7.5 x 8.5, December 14, 1944. Letter to "Professor Seward," in part: "Your very kind letter didn't catch up to me—or, rather, I didn't catch up to it—till I got back from Nome this morning. Unfortunately, I'm pulling out for my 'home' down in the Aleutians early tomorrow morning, haven't a copy of any of my books either here or there, and won't have time to try to get hold of one before I shove off…so all I can say is I'm sorry. Maybe after this war is over. If you're still interested then you might try me at Pleasantville, New York." Double-matted and framed with a still from the film adaptation of The Maltese Falcon to an overall size of 24 x 15. In fine condition, with slight fading to the signature.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hammett, a veteran of the first World War, again enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a sergeant in the Aleutian Islands, where he edited an Army newspaper entitled The Adakian. Hammett's longtime mistress, the playwright Lillian Hellman, lived in a large farmhouse on Hardscrabble Road in Pleasantville, New York.
