Description

TLS as president, one page, 6.5 x 8.75, White House letterhead, April 8, 1938. Letter to Emil Hurja of the National Press Building, in full: “I am thrilled by those early Roosevelt items from the Nicholas Low papers. I did not know that you had acquired the latter and they must be a veritable gold mine. Ever so many thanks. I have been delighted to sign the ‘Looking Forward’ and the pamphlets.” Archivally matted and framed with a portrait under museum-quality glass to an overall size of 23.5 x 16.5. In very fine condition.

Nicholas Low (1739–1826) was a prominent merchant, landowner, and financier from New York City. It seems plausible that Low was connected to the Roosevelt family through their shared social, business, and political networks

Published in March 1933 when FDR was first inaugurated, the classic New York Times bestseller Looking Forward delivers Roosevelt’s honest appraisal of the events that contributed to the Great Depression. He assails the failure of the banking system and the U.S. government and sets forth his reasoning and hope for the major reforms of his New Deal.
