Signed book: Masters of Deceit. Later printing. NY: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1961. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8.5, 374 pages. Nicely signed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "J. Edgar Hoover." In fine condition, with the name of the original owner, "Clarence J. Smith, Jr.," inscribed on the front pastedown and some small white flecks of paint to the rear board. A desirable, uninscribed example of Hoover's detailed critique of communism in the United States, written as both a warning against the perceived threat of communist infiltration and a guide to identifying and combating subversive activities. Consignor notes that it originates from the estate of FBI Agent Clarence Smith, Jr.
