American lawyer (1818-1891) best known as Lincoln's law partner from 1841. He later wrote a biography of Lincoln, Herndon's Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life, which provided an important up-close account of Lincoln's career in law and politics. ADS by Lincoln's law partner William Herndon, signed by him on behalf of the firm, "Lincoln & Herndon," one page, 7.75 x 6.5, docketed on the reverse by a clerk, "Filed Dec. 20/56." Handwritten legal document by William Henry Hernon in the case of "McGraw vs. Adams & Lewis," headed: "Demurrer to Cross Bill." In full: "And the said Complainant says: that the cross bill of the said defendants is untrue and insufficient in Equity &c and being insufficient and untrue the said Complainant Demurs thereto." In fine condition, with a roughly torn lower edge.
William Henry Herndon was the junior partner in Abraham Lincoln's third law partnership in Springfield, Illinois between 1844 and the early 1860's. Herndon had met Lincoln while they both shared a second-story room above Joshua Speed's store. He later studied law at Lincoln's law office while Lincoln was in partnership with Stephen T. Logan. Lincoln and Herndon had a good working relationship balancing each other. Mary Lincoln developed a strong dislike for Herndon.
Upon leaving Springfield for the presidency, Lincoln remarked to Herndon: 'If I live, I'm coming back sometime, and we'll go right on practicing law as if nothing had ever happened.' (Benjamin Thomas: "Abraham Lincoln," 1952, pp. 238-239.) After Lincoln's assassination, Herndon researched the early life of his former law partner. He co-authored a controversy biography with Jesse Weik: 'Herndon's Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life,' published in 1889.
