Description

Signed book: A Reprint of the List of Books and Pamphlets Relating to Abraham Lincoln Compiled by Daniel Fish. First edition thus, limited issue, numbered 74/102. Rock Island, IL: Augustana Book Concern, 1926. Hardcover bound in half morocco, top edge gilt, 6.75 x 9.5, 380 pages. Signed on the colophon in fountain pen by editor Joseph Benjamin Oakleaf. In fine condition.

Joseph Benjamin Oakleaf (1858-1930) was one of the 'Big Five' Lincoln Collectors in the early 1900s. Born in Moline, Illinois, he along with Judge James Bollinger and Harry Lytle were all leading collectors of Lincolniana, all residing in the Quad Cities. Oakleaf spoke and wrote on Lincoln. His greatest contribution to Lincoln literature was his Lincoln Bibliography published in 1925, limited to 102 copies that listed 1576 titles not included in the 1906 Daniel Fish bibliography—Daniel Fish (1848-1924) was also one of the 'Big Five' Lincoln Collectors residing in Minneapolis.

Since many collectors did not have a copy of Fish's bibliography as a companion to Oakleaf's bibliography, Oakleaf sought permission to reprint the 1906 Fish bibliography as a supplement to his 1925 bibliography, both being bound in identical half black morocco leather. In this manner, a collector of Lincolniana would possess a complete two volume Lincoln Bibliography set. The numbered 102 copies corresponded with the 102 copies of Oakleaf's 1925 bibliography. This was the standard Lincoln Bibliography until the Illinois State Historical Society published Jay Monaghan's Bibliography of Lincolniana in 1943.
