Description

"I think you will be interested to know that Calvin asked every day about the nomination"

ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 6.75, White House letterhead, July 27, 1924. Handwritten letter to "Mrs. Harriman," in full: "Your kind thought expressed in the flowers and your note touches me very deeply and I thank you sincerely. You wrote of the effect that the announcement of Calvin's death had upon that great convention in New York and I think you will be interested to know that Calvin asked every day about the nomination. The Monday that he died he asked me after lunch if they had nominated anybody for President and I said, 'No, Calvin, the latest suggestion is that they nominate father and go home.' He nearly laughed and said, 'I'd been thinking about that, too.' I love that bit from Stevenson and it might have been written for him. From his little babyhood until his last conscious moment he always had a smile ready for you and when his pain was most severe he gave us an encouraging smile if he looked at us. (That's horribly mixed but you'll understand). The President joins me in grateful acknowledgment of your understanding sympathy." In fine condition.

Calvin Coolidge Jr., the youngest son of President Calvin Coolidge, tragically died at the age of 16 on July 7, 1924, after suffering from blood poisoning caused by a blister on his toe. The blister, which became infected after a tennis match on the White House grounds, led to sepsis in an era before antibiotics. His sudden, unexpected death transfixed the nation and deeply affected President Coolidge, who often reflected on the loss with profound sorrow.
