Hand-corrected typed draft letter as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, January 31, 1940. Hand-corrected draft of a typed letter to Carroll Greenough of the Federal Works Agency, in full: "Please accept my sincerest thanks for that generous contribution you sent me for the Infantile Paralysis Fund, as well as for the nice birthday note which accompanied it. Your gift has been sent to the Treasurer of the fund and I am delighted to have it from my old schoolmate and fellow celebrant of Jan. 30—as ever." Roosevelt pens the last sixteen words in his own hand. In very fine condition.
Facing a personal struggle with polio that left him permanently paralyzed, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped start two foundations for polio research and treatment: the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which is now known as the March of Dimes. Dedicated to funding vaccine research and helping patients throughout their rehabilitation process, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis made a strong appeal to the public to get involved; quite literally adhering to singer Eddie Cantor's fundraising call to 'send in their dimes,' the American public filled the White House mail room with coin-filled birthday wishes for the President. The March of Dimes remains one of the most prominent nonprofit organizations in the United States to this day.
From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
