TLS as president signed “FDR,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, November 27, 1944. Letter to Brig. Gen. William J. Donovan, director of the Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the CIA). In full: "I have read your kind letter with the deepest appreciation. With a full heart, I thank you for your good wishes." In fine condition, with a light stain to the bottom blank area, and two file holes to the left edge. Accompanied by a photocopy of Donovan's letter to FDR, in full: "The election clearly shows the determination of a great majority of the American people to support you in the conduct of the war and the aims of your peace-plan. The best of luck and continued strength to see it through."
William J. Donovan, often called the 'Father of American Intelligence,' was a key figure during World War II as the head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA. A close confidant of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Donovan was entrusted by the president to lead the nation's first centralized intelligence agency, playing a vital role in coordinating espionage, sabotage, and propaganda against Axis powers during World War II. His leadership and innovative strategies helped lay the groundwork for modern intelligence operations.
