ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.25, White House letterhead, June 17, 1902. Handwritten letter to sportsman and soldier Winthrop Chanler, a friend and fellow veteran of the Spanish-American War. In full: "It was very good of you to write me; I am so glad you like my godson's bowl. We fairly reveled (have I left out an l?) in Winty. You must surely be on here next winter. Don't you like Wister's 'Virginian'?" In very fine condition.
Theodore Roosevelt was a famous admirer of frontier life and frequently corresponded with Owen Wister, the author of The Virginian. Wister's 1902 novel is considered the first modern Western, portraying the rugged individualism and moral dilemmas of its titular cowboy hero in the Wyoming Territory. Roosevelt, who shared Wister’s romanticized view of the American West, praised the book for its authentic depiction of frontier values and its influence on American culture.
From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
