Description

President Roosevelt lists his White House guests, including a "Wednesday lunch" with several cabinet members

Handwritten visitor list penned by President Theodore Roosevelt, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.5, White House letterhead, [June 2–5, 1902]. Roosevelt jots down the names of his guests for "Monday, 7:30," "Tuesday, 7:30," "Wednesday lunch, 1:30," and "Thursday, 7:30." On Monday, he lists "Lodges," referring to the influential Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts, and "Leonard Wood," the former commander of the 'Rough Riders,' under whom Roosevelt served during the Spanish-American War. For Tuesday, he notes the surnames of numerous senators and representatives, including Senator Mark Hanna, Speaker of the House David B. Henderson, Senator Redfield Proctor, Senator Shelby M. Cullom, and many others.

For "Wednesday lunch," the invited guests include Senator Chauncey Depew, Secretary of War Elihu Root, Secretary of State John Hay, Attorney General Philander Knox, and Postmaster General Henry Clay Payne. Thursday brings Senator Charles W. Fairbanks (who would become Roosevelt's vice president in 1905), Senator Nelson W. Aldrich, Senator John T. Morgan, Secretary of the Navy William Henry Moody (who Roosevelt would nominate to the Supreme Court in 1906), Secretary of State John Hay, Secretary of War Elihu Root, and several other powerful politicians. In fine condition, with several pencil notations in another hand.

From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
