Civil War-dated ADS, signed “Geo. A. Custer, 2nd Lt. 2nd Cav.,” one page, 6.75 x 5, July 20, 1861. One day before the First Battle of Bull Run, Custer prepares a horse at Camp Arlington, in full: "Received of Sgt. Dunlop 1 horse & accouterments." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, intersecting folds, and overall creasing. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
Custer's graduated from West Point less than a month earlier on June 24, 1861, upon which he was ordered to Washington to join the Second Cavalry. After reporting to the War Department, he was ordered to the front at Manassas, Virginia. The horse noted here belonged to Sgt. Dunlop, someone Custer knew, and was requisitioned as his transport to Virginia. The horse and rider arrived at the encampment around 2 A.M., just in time for the First Battle of Manassas. This handwritten Custer document is one of his earliest autographs in private hands.
