Description

TLS signed “Benj. F. Butler,” one page, 8.25 x 11, law firm letterhead, February 13, 1888. Letter to O. D. Barrett in Washington, DC, in part: "You will find an authority to restrain the payment of claims under the British American Arbitration or Convention, which came before old Wiley, and he had issued an order to pay the money to a receiver. It was then in the Treasury or State Department, I don't remember which. It was the British fellow that ran away to Canada as I remember, and his claim agent Colonel somebody tried to get hold of the money, and Wiley gave a discharge to the receiver while he was getting bond. Durant was in the case; you can easily find it. It went to the Supreme Court afterwards, some ten or twelve years ago." In fine condition, with a small stain to the lower left edge.
