Description

Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824-1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word 'sideburns.' ALS signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 3.5, Edghill Farm letterhead, June 4, 1877. Letter to Col. Nathan Appleton, in part: "I am very sorry that a previous engagement will prevent my acceptance of the kind invitation of your Executive Committee to attend the meeting to be held in aid of the proposed Soldiers Home in Massachusetts." In very good to fine condition, with a short edge tear, and some old adhesive residue in a blank area of the signed side.
