Description

Union general (1830-1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. ALS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Lincoln memorial University letterhead, January 24, 1900. Written from Burlington, Vermont, a letter to his nephew Rowland, in part: "I am glad you knew Guy. Today I have been reading over many old letters searching for some special statistics. I ran across many of my own written to your aunt. They were full of…addressed directly & indirectly to Guy when a child. Indeed his father & mother loved him. He was a manly boy, thoughtful & studious, his mother's care & constant companion. Her heart is still bound up in his. It will be a happy union when they meet again." In fine condition. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
