Esteemed Austrian-American film director (1890–1976) who helmed such classics as Fury and the landmark science-fiction epic Metropolis. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 1971. Letter to Gary Dorst. In full: “It is almost worth living to be eighty to find out that one has so many friends. I am sincerely moved and grateful for so many remembrances which reached me on my birthday. The problem is that there are too many—too many cables, telegrams, letters and cards, to allow for individual replies. If I sat down today and started to acknowledge each 80th birthday message, by the time I finished I’d be 81. So I am hoping you will forgive me and accept this acknowledgment in the spirit in which it is intended. The cold print is really a disguise for a warm and grateful heart.” In fine condition, with light scattered wrinkling. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
