Distinguished Hungarian-born American film director (1886–1962) who helmed such all-time classics as Casablanca, Angels with Dirty Faces, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and White Christmas. Nominated four times for an Academy Award as Best Director, he won the Oscar for Casablanca. TLS signed “Mike,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Paramount Pictures Corporation letterhead, April 30, 1957. Letter to an aspiring actress. In full: “Sorry I didn’t have a chance to answer your letter sooner, but I’ve been snowed under with scripts. Your photographs were beautiful. You look wonderful in them. I think you’d do so much better if you had an agent. As I told you, when I make a picture, I will try to use you.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
