Born Maffeo Barberini, he served as pope from 1623 to 1644. He was the last pope to expand the papal territory by force of arms. Manuscript DS, in Italian, signed “M[affeus] Legatus,” three pages, 8.5 x 12, 1612. Untranslated document, boldly signed at the bottom of the first page by the future Pope. Remaining pages are written out in a secretarial hand. In very good condition, with scattered light toning, soiling, and creasing, red wax seal remnants to lower left of first page, and mild edge wear. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
