Fabled Confederate general (1833–1864) best known for his consummate skill in reconnaissance and as a cavalry officer. After leading successful offensive actions during the Northern Virginia Campaign—as well as a “late,” disastrous showing at Gettysburg, which led to a personal rebuke by Lee—Stuart was killed during the Overland Campaign at the age of 31. Clipped war-dated handwritten and signed endorsement, 3 x 2, dated March 7, 1864. Stuart writes, “Hd. Qs. Cav. Corp, Mar 7, 1864, Res. Forwarded. JEB Stuart, Major Genl.” Endorsement is affixed to a 6.5 x 7.5 light blue album page. In very good condition, with rounded and trimmed edges, a couple other small notations, a uniform shade of mild toning, and a bit of scattered light soiling. One of the most elusive Civil War legends as he prepared for what would be his final battle. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
