Partly-printed DS, signed “Go. Washington,” one page both sides, 7 x 12.5, June 9, 1783. A military discharge for “David Pratt a Drum Major in the third Connecticut Regiment” (this regiment saw action in New Jersey and New York). Nicely signed at the conclusion in ink by Washington and countersigned by John Trumbull and Major John Graham, who awards Harter the Badge of Merit for “six years faithful service.” Double matted and framed with a portrait of Washington in uniform, to an overall size of 19.5 x 18. On April 18 of the same year, Washington issued general orders announcing the “Cessation of Hostilities between the United States of America and the King of Great Britain;” the Treaty of Paris, which marked the formal conclusion of the war, was signed on September 3. Washington made his famous farewell to his troops and resigned his commission in the following December. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one vertical fold through single letter of signature, and a horizontal fold through bottom portion of signature, and some scattered light toning and foxing. An impressive piece of American history in remarkably noteworthy condition; most similar Washington discharges showed heavy wear where this one presents beautifully! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
