Description

Washington writes to a close confidant in between the ratification of the Constitution and his election as president, beautifully presented with a rare official broadside

ALS signed “Go. Washington,” one page, 7.75 x 11, July 24, 1788. Washington writes from Mt. Vernon to David Stuart in Abingdon [Virginia]. In full: “From Mr. Lund Washington’s [Washington’s cousin and manager at Mount Vernon] I received your letter of the 20th instant enclosing Mr. Hopkins’s acct., receipts, &c. Enclosed you have a receipt for the amount of your statement; specifying the several articles which constitute the aggregate sum of £567.10.5. I am yr. affect. & obdt. serv….” Cloth matted and framed with an official broadside signed in print by President Washington and John Adams establishing salaries of officers in government, to an overall size of 31.5 x 21. Washington’s close friend, physician David Stuart (1753–1814), married Eleanor Custis, the widow of Martha Washington’s son, John Parke Custis, in 1783. Stuart later served on the commission that determined the boundaries of Washington, D.C. Washington and Stuart carried on a longtime correspondence, much of which concerned both Washington’s business matters at Mount Vernon and the formative stages of America’s fledgling federal government. With New Hampshire’s affirmative vote a month earlier, on June 21, the Constitution was officially ratified. The reverse of the letter bears the address panel in Washington’s hand. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (archivally reinforced separations and small holes touching a few words of text), expertly repaired seal-related hole to blank lower margin, two blocks of mild toning, slight show-through from address panel on reverse, and handling wear. The signature is bold, dark, completely free of any faults, and virtually perfect. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
