Signed book: Gone With the Wind. First edition, first printing. NY: Macmillan Company, 1936. Hardcover, 6.25 x 9, 1037 pages. Margaret Mitchell authored only one book. But, her lone work proved to be an immeasurably endearing aspect of cultural Americana, arguably having the furthest reaching influence of any American novel. Of course, we speak of Mitchell’s classic, Gone With the Wind. The offered book is an exceedingly rare first printing and first edition copy of the timeless masterpiece, and its venerable author saw fit to grace the second free end page with a truly splendid, “Margaret Mitchell” signature. So as to preserve its visual properties, this early printed copy of the 1937 Pulitzer Prize winner has been rebound in custom gray, full leatherette binding, which carries gilded characters on the front and spine. Efforts to maintain the wonderful piece have resulted in the addition of new endpaper, which has been inserted in front and back. One unfortunate condition impediment is found at pages 25-26, where the lower corner of each leaf has been torn off (removing the ends of 11 lines). Additionally, a pair of very small holes to the right of Mitchell’s signature extends into pages 31 and 32. Toning and soiling to the signed page is evident, yet the 70-year-old relic exhibits fine condition. Nearly a quarter of a million copies of Gone With the Wind were printed in its first five weeks, and over 30 million copies have been sold to date! The offered gem was printed as part of the very first “batch” in May 1936, and as such ushered in the era of one of the greatest novels of all time! Mitchell was struck and killed by a speeding vehicle in 1949, and so the world was never again to benefit from her stellar prose. Not only was the offered book among the first released of Mitchell’s single compositional endeavor, but the keepsake boldly showcases her desirable autograph.
