Description

Vintage matte-finish 8.5 x 11.75 Bachrach portrait photo of Herbert Hoover, signed and inscribed in the lower border in ink, “To Hon. Sheldon Whitehouse, with kind regards of, Herbert Hoover." Matted to a slightly larger size and in fine condition.

The recipient, Sheldon Whitehouse (1883–1965), was an American career diplomat who entered the Foreign Service in 1908 and held posts in London, Caracas, Paris, Madrid, Athens, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg, later participating in the American Commission to Negotiate Peace at Paris in 1919. He subsequently served as chief of the State Department’s Near Eastern Division and as U.S. Minister to Guatemala from 1930 to 1933 and Colombia from 1933 to 1934.
