Description

"We are coming out with a new TV show, starting October 3rd, called the Mickey Mouse Club Show featuring a group of kids"

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 9, August 31, 1955. Letter to Chester Morris, in part: "I was interested in your suggestion that we do a series of Horse Operas with kids. We are coming out with a new TV show, starting October 3rd, called the Mickey Mouse Club Show featuring a group of kids. This is a daily show, Monday through Friday from five to six o'clock.

As the Mouseketeers (that's the name given these kids) become known to the television audience, it is our plan to put them in a Western Series, such as you suggest. Every Friday the Mouseketeers appear in Western outfits for the 'Roundup' where they round up other kids to appear on the Show.

Trying to get footage with children to meet a television budget is fairly difficult when you consider their limited working time of four hours daily—plus their parents! Frankly, the program we are now doing is $1,000,000 over the budget, so just how we're going to come out, I don't know. However, it is coincidental that you should write us about something we already have under way." Affixed to a larger mount and in very good to fine condition, with light overall creasing.

A fascinating behind-the-scenes letter written just weeks before the 1955 debut of The Mickey Mouse Club, Disney’s landmark entry into daily television. Walt candidly discusses the creation of the Mouseketeers, the planned Friday “Roundup” segments, and the extraordinary financial pressures of producing the ambitious new program—offering a rare glimpse of one of his most enduring franchises while it was still taking shape.
