Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1740–1799) who served in the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1782. Manuscript DS, signed “Wm. Paca,” one page, 12.75 x 11.5, July 5, 1785. As governor of Maryland, Paca grants and confirms to John Williams of Somerset County title to two adjoining tracts of land together containing 204¾ acres. The document recounts Williams's petition for a special warrant of resurvey after discovering vacant land contiguous to the original grants, noting that the resurvey found a deficiency in the earlier tracts and identified an additional 18½ acres of vacant land. After a portion of the vacancy was applied to make good the deficiency and Williams paid the required consideration for the remainder, the State of Maryland formally granted and confirmed title to the consolidated property. Signed in the left margin by Governor William Paca and countersigned by Chancellor John Rogers. In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining, and some creasing and small holes to the heavy vertical fold to the right side. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Paca's autograph material into the 'rare' category among the Signers.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
