Description

TLS as president, one page, 7.25 x 8.75, White House letterhead, September 19, 1907. Addressed from Oyster Bay, a letter to University of California President Benjamin Ide Wheeler, concerning a disputed California postmaster appointment, in full: “I have your letter of the 12th instant, with enclosures. You have given me just what I want about Thomas. The statement of Marston in particular is conclusive. You need not bother any more about Thomas. Now, about Merrill. Do have the people make the strongest possible effort to get the Senators to acquiesce in the appointment. I do not see why Knowland should not be made to realize also that it is unwise to affront the better sentiment of the community by opposing Merrill. Of course let it be understood that Merrill is not going to take the office with the desire to upset Knowland, but simply to administer the post office on the highest basis, so as to give satisfaction to every citizen who deals with it.” In fine condition, with slight fading to the signature.

This letter captures Theodore Roosevelt exercising presidential influence behind the scenes in a contested California appointment fight. Determined to secure the selection of a candidate named Merrill, Roosevelt urges his correspondent to pressure the state's senators and argues that Congressman Joseph R. Knowland should be made to understand that opposition to the appointment runs contrary to "the better sentiment of the community."
