Description

TLS signed “Sincerely yours, Theodore Roosevelt,” one page, 5.25 x 4.5, Oyster Bay letterhead, April 2, 1915. Letter to Rev. F. L. Humphreys, in full: "I have just received your book. I especially value it as coming from the Chaplain of the Society of the Cincinnati. I think it is particularly fortunate that the book should be published at this time." Roosevelt makes a couple of minor corrections to the text; one line is also underlined. In fine condition, with trimmed edges.

The Society of the Cincinnati, the nation's oldest patriotic organization, was founded in 1783 to commemorate the American Revolutionary War that saw the creation of the United States; membership is largely restricted to descendants of military officers who served in the Continental Army.

Frank Landon Humphreys (1858–1937) was an American Episcopal clergyman, author, military chaplain, and civic figure who served as canon of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, chaplain and president of the New Jersey Society of the Cincinnati, and acting chaplain at West Point. A decorated Francophile and prolific writer, he authored works on church music, France, and George Washington, and served as mayor of Boynton Beach, Florida.
