Description

Third-person ALS from Millard Fillmore, one page, 4.75 x 7.25, January 30 [likely 1840]. Handwritten acceptance letter for a dinner invitation hosted by John Quincy Adams and his wife, Louisa Adams, in full: “Mr. Fillmore has the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. and Mrs. Adams' invitation to dinner on Tuesday, the fourth of February, and to state that he will do himself the honor to attend.” The reverse of the second integral page is addressed by Fillmore to “Hon. J. Q. Adams, Washington.” Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition.

A charming social note linking two future presidents. Although undated as to year, the letter was almost certainly written in 1840, when February 4th fell on a Tuesday, and both Millard Fillmore and John Quincy Adams were serving in the House of Representatives. During this period, Adams was enjoying his celebrated post-presidential career in Congress, while Fillmore was emerging as a leading New York Whig. An attractive association piece uniting two presidents in the social life of antebellum Washington.
