Description

"Truly sorry to hear of the loss you have sustained by the loss of your autographs and cheerfully do what I can to repair it"

Civil War-dated ALS, one page, 5 x 8, June 10, 1861. Addressed from Buffalo, New York, a handwritten letter to “Master Alfred T. Goodman,” in full: “I have your letter of the 3d. and am truly sorry to hear of the loss you have sustained by the loss of your autographs and cheerfully do what I can to repair it.” In fine condition.

Written on the day of the Battle of Big Bethel, June 10, 1861, widely regarded as the first major land engagement of the Civil War, this letter finds former President Millard Fillmore in Buffalo, New York, responding to a young, down-on-his-luck autograph collector. Fillmore had left the presidency in 1853 and by 1861 was a private citizen, though one who remained engaged in public affairs and supportive of the Union war effort. The recipient may be Alfred Thomas Goodman (1845–1871), the future historian and secretary of the Western Reserve Historical Society, who later assembled an autograph collection that included the signatures of every United States president.
