Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page both sides, 9 x 13.5, June 7, 1948. President Truman grants a pardon to Pierre Leveque, who had pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges in both South Carolina and New York in 1936, serving concurrent 18-month sentences at Lewisburg Penitentiary. In part: "Whereas, the said Pierre Leveque, unless pardoned, will be deported; and Whereas, it has been made to appear to me that the said Pierre Leveque is paralytic and that deportation would hasten his death and grievously hurt his American-born wife; and Whereas, it has further been made to appear to me that the said Pierre Leveque, since release from prison, has conducted himself in a law-abiding manner and is a fit object of Executive clemency: Now, therefore, be it known, that I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States of America…do hereby grant unto the said Pierre Leveque a full and unconditional pardon." Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by President Harry S. Truman, and countersigned by Acting Attorney General Philip B. Perlman. The red seal affixed at the conclusion remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, intersecting folds, and toning to the signed side from prior display.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
