Description

“To the Who, Thank you for working so hard on the television show - really.”

ALS from Mick Jagger to fellow British rock legends The Who, signed “Mick, x,” one page, 8 x 10, The Rolling Stones Ltd. letterhead, no date [circa December 1968]. Short handwritten letter from the Rolling Stones frontman “to the Who,” reading: “Thank you for working so hard on the television show - really.” Includes the original ‘The Rolling Stones Ltd.’ transmittal envelope annotated in felt tip, “The Who.” In fine condition, with light show-through at the center from an old tape stain on the back.

The letter relates to The Who’s participation in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, the legendary and long-shelved television special filmed in December 1968 featuring performances by the Rolling Stones, the Who, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and others. The Who’s explosive performance of ‘A Quick One, While He’s Away’ became one of the defining moments of the production and contributed heavily to the mythology surrounding the project, with the Stones reportedly dissatisfied with their own performance after an exhausting overnight shoot that stretched into the early hours of December 12.

Portions of the film were later discovered among the belongings of pianist and longtime Stones associate Ian Stewart following his death in 1985, while additional missing footage surfaced in a Who vault in London in 1993. The project was ultimately restored and officially released in 1996. An appealing example of camaraderie between two of the defining British rock bands of the era.
