Description

DS, one page, 8 x 10, September 20, 1963. An Eric Easton Ltd. “Emergency Contract” between Philip Hayward and “The Rolling Stones,” with the latter agreeing to perform a concert at the Rex Ballroom in Cambridge on September 30, 1963, for a salary of “£150:0:0.” Signed at the conclusion in ballpoint by founding member Brian Jones. In fine condition. Eric Easton, co-manager of the Stones alongside Andrew Loog Oldham during the band’s formative years, oversaw the group’s early concert bookings and professional engagements, making contracts of this type central to his role in the band’s development.

The agreement dates to a pivotal moment in the group’s ascent, executed just five weeks before the release of ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ and shortly before the Rolling Stones emerged as one of Britain’s leading live attractions. Notably, the September 30th performance was an extracurricular engagement arranged between dates on the band’s first national package tour, headlined by Bo Diddley and the Everly Brothers—the tour opened the day prior with a concert at the New Victoria Theatre; that the Stones were simultaneously commanding independent bookings while appearing on a major touring bill reflects the band’s rapidly increasing demand. A superb early Rolling Stones performance contract dating from the band’s breakthrough year.
