Description

Album flat for U2’s debut studio album, Boy, signed on the front in black felt tip, “Thanks to you too! Bono, 81,” “Da Edge,” “Larry,” and “Adam Clayton,” with one member adding an inscription to “Howie!” In fine condition, with light creases along the left edge. The record is not included.

Originates from the estate of Howie Klein (1948–2025), the former president of Reprise Records from 1989 to 2001, who oversaw the career development of recording artists such as Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Joni Mitchell, the Ramones, the Pretenders, Neil Young, Alanis Morissette, Barenaked Ladies, Eric Clapton, Green Day, Enya, Fleetwood Mac, the Smiths, Ice-T, and dozens of other major acts.

Prior to this, Klein had established himself as an early tastemaker within the punk and independent music scenes. After moving to San Francisco in the mid-1970s, he became active in the city’s underground culture, using radio to champion emerging artists. From 1976 to 1978, he co-hosted The Outcastes on KSAN with Norman Davis and Chris Knab—widely considered the first regular punk radio show—featuring interviews with acts like the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Devo, and the Cramps. He later co-hosted the long-running heavy metal program Rampage Radio from 1982 to 2011 on KUSF and Radio Valencia.

Klein obtained these autographs when U2 played at the Student Union Ballroom at San Jose State University in San Jose, California, on March 18, 1981. He even wrote a review of the show: ‘No one at the school figured a relatively unknown band from Dublin, Ireland would draw nearly twice as many anxious fans as the room could properly hold. They did. And it seemed that each and every one of them wanted to dance — vigorously — on the earthquake-proofed floor, which is built on springs and is capable of vibrating the entire building with the right stimulus. U2 was definitely the right stimulus. If their album tends towards an arty presentation of their abstract and spiritual — even subtle and delicate material, their live show was every bit as aggressive, direct and powerful.’
