Description

The decipherer of the Rosetta Stone sends his books and papers to Florence

French scholar (1790–1832) who published the first translation of the Rosetta Stone hieroglyphs in 1822. ANS in French, signed “J. F. Champollion,” one page, 7 x 3.75, no date. Handwritten note, in part (translated): "I request that Mr. Marquis Melchiorri be so kind as to deliver to Messrs. Jullien and Lacouture, bankers in Rome, the books, papers, and stamps that he has removed from our room in the Hôtel de Frantz. These gentlemen will be so kind as to send them to me by the most prompt means in Florence to Mr. Vieusseux, Director of the Literary Cabinet." In fine condition, with some trivial brushing to the ink.

Champollion’s note offers a revealing glimpse into the practical realities of his Italian travels, as he arranges for books, papers, and stamps left in Rome to be forwarded to him in Florence. The figures named situate the letter within a learned Franco-Italian network: the Marquis Giuseppe Melchiorri was a Roman antiquarian and author of the 'Guida metodica di Roma e suoi contorni,' while Giovan Pietro Vieusseux was the influential founder of Florence’s Gabinetto Scientifico Letterario, a major 19th-century reading room and intellectual meeting place for European scholars and writers.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
