Partly-printed LS in French, signed “C. de Gaulle,” one page, 8.5 x 12.75, January 8, 1959. Official letter of state to "His Excellency Mr. Hernan Siles Zuazo, President of the Republic of Bolivia," in part: "I have the honor to let Your Excellency know that I took up office today as President of the Republic, President of the Community. I would like to assure Your Excellency that all my efforts will be directed towards maintaining and strengthening the excellent relationship existing between France and Bolivia. I would be pleased to be able to count on the precious support of Your Excellency in accomplishing this task so beneficial to the interests of Our two Countries." In fine condition.
On January 8, 1959, Charles de Gaulle became president of France, marking the formal beginning of the Fifth Republic and a decisive shift in French politics. His return to power came amid deep national instability, driven largely by the ongoing Algerian War and the collapse of the Fourth Republic’s weak parliamentary system. As president, de Gaulle sought to restore strong executive authority, revising France’s constitutional framework to emphasize leadership, national unity, and political stability. His presidency symbolized both continuity with France’s wartime resistance legacy and a bold attempt to redefine the country’s role on the global stage.
